How To Stick To Your New Years Resolution - Anak IT Style

There are plenty of ways to stick your new years resolution. Whether it be to lose weight, take up a new good habit or get rid of an old bad habit, it takes commitment. Like A LOT! What if there is a way to get what you need to develop that habit all the way?

Beeminder - Be Mindful of your Goals

By making a pledge (for free) on Beeminder, it will help check on you if you are on track or not. If you stray too far, you lost your pledge. If you actually put a pledge (and this time, I mean actually pay for it like $10), that means you are invested in yourself to make sure that you achieve your goal. If you don't achieve it, you lose your $10. Check out the video below.

Now how do you make sure you achieve that new years resolution or that goal or that new good habit or getting rid of an old bad habit? Here are several web apps for you:

HabitRPG - Build a Habit While Playing RPG

Wanna play a game? No seriously, if you wanna build a habit, play at it with this nifty web app and game in RPG! And not only that, you can have more fun if you do it with a friend or more. Basically forming a party of other likeminded individuals who checks on each other to make sure that the goal is achieved.

Github - Social Coding While Networking

For those coders and programmers (and maybe designers) out there, you may have heard about Github. Well, if you wanna practice your coding skills or get better at what you do or even finish that IT project you promised your lecturer at your Uni, Github is the place to publish and get your work on track. Beeminder + Github is a powerful duo to keep track on whether you are actually progressing with your coding and designing of your project all the way to finishing an actual IT product. Get your hands on those keyboard and start coding away! Can't do it alone? Get a team and do it together with HabitRPG.

Duolingo - Learn a New Language in a Game

Ever wanted to learn Spanish but never got around to it? Learn it over on Duolingo. The app has a very intuitive interface and learning style to get you to understand and enjoy the language as you learn new words to use. I have learnt a few words and it was fun! Not only that, linking it with Beeminder will help keep in track of how far have I progress and how close I am to reaching my goal at the end. Duolingo has the following languages available:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Dutch
  • Portuguese
  • Irish
  • Danish and
  • Swedish
Unfortunately, no Brunei Malay, Malaysian Malay, Indonesian Malay, and all of that Malay language and dialects. Check out the video below.

Remember, you don't have to do your new years resolution. Do it with a friend or your sibling or family. Get together, exercise, code, design, build a new good habit, get rid of a bad one. It's a lot more fun that way.

So, what's your new years resolution?

Go Green With Solar Energy

"Mengapa keta atue parking arah tangah-tangah lautan atue kan? Ngam-ngam bawah lampung lagi tue..."
The reason is...

Charging a handphone with solar panel
Salam Anak IT readers...
I would like to expose an energy efficient technology called SOLAR PANEL =) tau jua biskita tue kalie apa binatangnya huhu so na payah panjang ceta for today la k ;)
Advantages:
  • Can be used anywhere, inda payah cari plug karan rah dinding
  • UNLIMITED power source (renewable)
  • Silent - bukan hingar portable generator
  • No pollution
  • Minimum maintenance
Actually banyak plang lagi its advantages... It also carries disadvantages such as expensive (short-term) and may not be reliable on bad weather or even at night... The good thing about it is the fact that it is renewable in a way that it can be used rapidly unlike fuel, abis dipakai abis tah tue... For a long-term power source, solar energy might benefit us hugely... Its just that we have less access to these kind of power "gadget", ada tapinya inda banyak kalie...
Here are examples of charging/using a laptop with solar energy:

Tips to Prolong Battery Life

Salammm~ Anak IT readers~
Today I want to *liat2 jam nunggu baduk* share on how to *pigang parut* prolong your laptop's battery life based on my experience and knowledge... Or in other words how to extend your laptop's battery life...
Lurus ke pancang or nya omputih straight to the point, I will just list out in bullet points:
  • Set the display's brightness... Mikin tarang, mikin menungap battery...
  • If inda makai wireless, tutup tia...
  • Same goes to bluetooth, tutup if inda bepakai
  • Run only programs/services that you need... Close all the less necessary programs/services running on the background...
  • Heat is the best enemy for electrical devices... Sama jua battery laptop... Keep the battery away from direct "heat" such as sunlight, api, microwave? oven? kuali hangat?
  • When you charge the battery, it is best practice if you make sure your laptop inda hangat before plug in the power cord... Or masa yang paling sesuai is when it is switched off or masa inda bepakai...
  • Yang this one i'm not really sure but someone told me that keep the battery away from magnets... Drop a comment if you have better thesis on this...
  • This one may sounds "nda mengana" but makes sense... "Keep your laptop defregmented regularly"
  • If rasanya jarang makai DVD-RW or any optical drives, CABUT =) hahaha so true...
  • Use SSD instead of HDD... Reasons? Low power consumption ;) Yea I know masih mahal...
  • Here is the best tips when you are using HDD... If you plan on watching movies, put it on your pengdrive and play it from there... The reason is that, if the movie is inside your HDD, this will make your HDD spinning for the whole movie's length...
  • Graphic card... If you are planning to buy a new laptop, I recommend you to buy laptop which comes with nVidia Optimus... Read further~
  • Another tip if you are planning on buying laptop in the near future (to be specific, late 2010), buy a laptop which usesPixelQi's display panel...
  • Again, another tip if kan membali laptop, cari battery nya yang tinggi cell nya... e.g, 12-Cells battery... But biasanya yang bejual di kadai masa ani 6-cells... Some 8-cells...
  • Bring your charger everywhere... Abis ceta...
There are some softwares which are created to help "virtually" extending the battery's life...
Hope that gives benifits to all of us... Sama-sama sharing ilmu di bulan Ramadhan ;)
Sekian, wassalam...

P/S : Selamat menjalani ibadah puasa~ =)

Reuse - Laptop Cooling Fan

Salam Anak IT.
Last time I posted an article on "Another way to make use your USB Extension Cable". The objective is to re-use any computer parts or computer related thing yang langsung inda lagi bepakai into something more useful. Today I have another "junk" for that.
It is my laptop's Cooling Fan jenis "portable". Since I seldom use my laptop, my cooling fan ampai-ampai tah ganya... So daripadanya ampai-ampai, tantu digunakan in other different way...
We all know that mostly (or maybe semua) cooling fan yang bejual di kadai atue makai USB cable as its power source's channel/medium... So... I was thinking... Is it possible if tane pakai USB device (usually around 5 volts) ke karan dinding (200+ volts)? Inda melatup ka tue if modify the wire then connect ke socket karan dinding? Hahaha obviously SOMETHING bad would happen... So I didn't try that out like I usually did... Then... I was thinking again... Of another alternative...
Tadaaa~ I saw this plug "ampai-ampai" sebalah my printer... So I smiled hahahaha you know what I was thinking... This converter plug is not an ordinary plug... It converts the current's voltage (and other elements which I am not familiar with since I am not an Electrical personnel) into USB's international standard voltage so that any USB devices can have power supply from any ordinary wall plug's current (lurus ka tue? haha).
The result? I used it as a cooling fan for both internet modem and router in the house. Well maybe not as good as "kipas angin" but just enough to ventilate the devices.
Time malam inda belampung. Bisai dijadikan lampung untuk tidur.

Sekian. Wabillahittaufiq walhidayah.

P/S : Good luck for those who are having exams especially those yang from UBD, ITB & UNISSA... Exam fever~ =)
